Gaur - Indian bison - กระทิง - เมย - गौर - 印度野牛 - Гаур - Seladang - Bos gaurus
These Gaurs or Indian bisons are from Pembroke Villa, Nilgiris District in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. I have a chance to visit this place on 30 and 31 Jun 2018. This area is a tea plantation. The Pembroke Villa is a 100 year old British era bungalow and it has been recreated with modern amenities to be a homestay. I just walk down from the house for about 500 meter at about 6 pm. and found this herd of gaur. I was far from them about 100 meters and it start move away.

The gaur (/ɡaʊər/, Bos gaurus), also called the Indian bison, is the largest extant bovine. This species is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1986. Population decline in parts of its range is likely to be more than 70% during the last three generations. However, population trends are stable in well-protected areas, and are rebuilding in a few areas which previously had been neglected....

กระทิงเคยพบได้ตลอดทั้งแผ่นดินใหญ่ของเอเชียใต้และเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้และศรีลังกา ปัจจุบันยังพบอยู่ในภูฏาน กัมพูชา จีน อินเดีย ลาว มาเลเซีย (เฉพาะคาบสมุทรมลายู) พม่า เนปาล ไทย และเวียดนาม
กระทิงเคยถูกแบ่งเป็นสามชนิดย่อย คือ Bos gaurus gaurus อาศัยอยู่ในอินเดีย เนปาล ภูฏาน B. g. readei อาศัยอยู่ในพม่า จีนตอนใต้ ลาว เวียดนาม กัมพูชา และไทยเหนือคอคอดกระ ส่วน B. g. hubbacki พบในประเทศไทยในพื้นที่ใต้คอคอดกระลงไปถึงมาเลเซียตะวันตก อย่างไรก็ตาม การแบ่งเป็นสามชนิดย่อยนี้อาศัยการแบ่งตามสีสันและขนาด ซึ่งปัจจุบันไม่นิยมใช้อีกต่อไป
ตามการแบ่งปัจจุบัน กระทิงมีสองชนิดย่อย คือ Bos gaurus gaurus อยู่ในอินเดียและเนปาล กับ Bos gaurus laosiensis อยู่ในพม่า ลาว เวียดนาม กัมพูชา ไทย และมาเลเซีย ชนิดย่อยที่อยู่ในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้มีกระดูกจมูก (nasal bones) สั้นกว่า เขาอยู่ชิดกันมากกว่า และท้ายทอยแคบกว่า .....
