Brown rat
The brown rat, also referred to as common rat, street rat, sewer rat, Hanover rat, Norway rat, Norwegian rat, or wharf rat (Rattus norvegicus) is one of the best known and most common rats.
One of the largest muroids, it is a brown or grey rodent with a body up to 25 cm (10 in) long, and a similar tail length; the male weighs on average 350 g (12 oz) and the female 250 g (9 oz). Thought to have originated in northern China, this rodent has now spread to all continents except Antarctica, and is the dominant rat in Europe and much of North America—making it by at least this particular definition the most successful mammal on the planet alongside humans.[2] With rare exceptions, the brown rat lives wherever humans live, particularly in urban areas.

หนูบ้าน, หนูนอร์เวย์, หนูสีน้ำตาล หรือ หนูท่อ (ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์: Rattus norvegicus) เป็นหนูชนิดที่พบเห็นได้บ่อยที่สุด เพราะเป็นหนูชนิดที่กระจายพันธุ์ไปอยู่ทั่วโลก พบได้ทุกสภาพแวดล้อม รวมถึงบ้านเรือนที่อาศัยของมนุษย์
สันนิษฐานว่าหนูบ้านกระจายพันธุ์มาจากประเทศนอร์เวย์ในภูมิภาคสแกนดิเนเวียที่เป็นแหล่งกำเนิดดั้งเดิม ไปทั่วทุกมุมโลกจากการติดไปกับเรือขนส่งสินค้าในยุควิคตอเรีย ซึ่งมันสามารถปรับตัวให้เข้ากับสภาพแวดล้อมทุกรูปแบบได้เป็นอย่างดี อีกทั้งยังมีอัตราการสืบพันธุ์ที่สูงและทักษะในการเอาตัวรอดที่เยี่ยมอีกด้วย
หนูบ้านจัดได้ว่าเป็นหนูชนิดที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในสกุล Rattus มีน้ำหนักโดยเฉลี่ยเมื่อโตเต็มที่ประมาณ 300-350 กรัม (ในบางตัวอาจหนักได้ถึง 400 กรัม) ขนาดลำตัวและหัวยาวประมาณ 180-250 มิลลิเมตร หางยาวประมาณ 150-220 มิลลิเมตร เท้าหลังยาวประมาณ 35-40 มิลลิเมตร หูยาวประมาณ 17-23 มิลลิเมตร ลักษณะขนหยาบมีสีน้ำตาลปนเทา ท้องสีเทา ส่วนจมูกทู่ ใบหูเล็ก ตาเล็ก หางสั้นมี 2 สี ด้านบนสีดำ ด้านล่างสีจาง มีเกล็ดหยาบ ๆ ที่หาง และด้านบนของเท้าหลังมีสีขาว มีเต้านมรวม 6 คู่ อยู่ที่อก 3 คู่ ท้อง 3 คู่ ถ้าอยู่ในชุมชนของมนุษย์ มักอยู่ตามรูท่อระบายน้ำ ใต้ถุนตึกหรือบ้านเรือน บริเวณลำคลอง กองขยะหรือตลาดสด
